Bukdong Poru, or Northeastern Artillery Pavilion is one of five artillery pavilions built in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. Similar to the other artillery pavilions, Bukdong Poru was built to protrude outward and used to attack enemies by housing artillery within. It was built by King Jungjo in 1794 during the Joseon Dynasty and was restored in 1977. Bukdong Poru is located in the northeast between Janganmun Gate and Hwahongmun Gate, which was built relatively high on the ground allowing for easy surveillance of the surrounding area.
The roof structure of Bukdong Poru differs between its exterior and interior. While the exterior features a Wujingak-type roof, the interior boasts a Matbae-type roof resembling an open book. Both designs represent traditional Korean roof structures and preserve the original beauty of curved roofs. The Wujingak roof consists of four Chunyeohmarus converging on Dongmaru, while the Matbae roof style, the oldest of the two, omits Chunyeomaru from the front and back.
