Bongdon
The Bongdon was where signal fires were lit. Fire and smoke were used to relay urgent messages. Rabbit droppings were burned during the day to make the smoke visible, and fires were lit during the night. The five pyres were used in different combinations to signal different situations.
In normal times, one pyre was lit to show that everything was well. However, when enemies were sighted far away from the border, two pyres were lit. Three would be lit when the enemy approached the borders, and four were lighted when they had entered Joseon borders. Five pyres meant a battle was going on with the enemy.
A stone heated room was provided under the Bongdon so that the signal fire soldiers could stay in.
