Hongsalmun, Sinpunggyo
The Hongsalmun was a symbolic gate raised in front of lecture halls, Confucian temples, and graves. It was made by raising two pillars to each side and linking the top with two long wooden beams, and sticking in Hongsals in regular intervals.
There are no records of when the Hongsalmuns started to be built, but as they were invariably raised in sacred areas, it is thought that they carried the meaning of sanctity and respect.
Immediately behind is there a small bridge called Sinpunggyo.
In the old days, the Myeongdangsu, sacred water coming from the Paldalsan, would flow from the right of the Hwaseong Haenggung’s rear area to the front gate of the Sinpungnu. The Myungdangsu had the meaning of making the palace officials, who passed it every day upon entering the palace, see it and make their minds pure. The Shinpunggyo was lost during the Japanese occupation, but was excavated and restored.
