Deukjungjeong Pavilion is a hall designed for archery enjoyment. It was originally constructed in the 14th year of King Jungjo's reign during the Joseon Dynasty in 1790. When Hwaseong Temporary Palace expanded in 1794, the hall was relocated to its current position behind Nangnamheon Hall. Additionally, a shooting platform for the king was installed in front of the hall. King Jungjo named the hall using a phrase from the Book of Rites, which reads, 'He who hits the mark is permitted to become a prince, but he who doesn’t hit the mark cannot be a prince.'
Whenever King Jungjo visited Hwaseong Temporary Palace, he enjoyed archery from the shooting platform in front of the palace. An enduring scene of King Jungjo engaging in archery and watching fireworks with his attendants during his mother Hyegyeonggung Hong's 60th birthday celebration in 1795 is captured in a painting called ‘Painting of King Shooting Arrows at Deukjungjeong Pavilion.'
