Bongnaedang is a building within Hwaseong Temporary Palace, constructed in 1789. During his visits, King Jungjo used Bongnaedang as his sleeping chamber. However, after the establishment of Jangrakdang in 1794, it was utilized by local officials. The name “Boknae” signifies that ‘if everything goes right on the outside, blessings will come from within.’ King Jungjo personally named the building and inscribed the hanging board called Pyeonaek. Unfortunately, the hanging board has been lost.
In the early 20th century, with the construction of Gyeonggi Provincial Hospital, Boknaedang was demolished. However, it was rebuilt in 1997 during the restoration of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. Additionally, Bongnaedang has gained popularity among tourists as several major scenes of the Korean drama "Dae Jang Geum" and numerous Korean movies and dramas were filmed there.
