King Jungjo, during the Joseon Dynasty, established his own royal guard named Jangyongyeong in 1785 to fortify and symbolize his royal authority. Naeyeong was entrusted with protecting the capital, Hanseong, while Wehyeong was assigned the task of safeguarding Hwaseong Fortress. Bukgunyeong and Namgunyeong were the locations where Wehyeong troops were stationed, symmetrically arranged on the left and right sides of Sinpungnu, the main gate of Hwaseong Temporary Palace. These two structures served as quarters for the cavalry of Jangyongwehyeong, accommodating 100 people each for eating and sleeping.
Furthermore, the royal guards stationed at both Bukgunyeong and Namgunyeong received special privileges. Those who held the top positions twice a year in spring and fall were granted high government posts. However, two years after King Jungjo’s death, the royal guard was demobilized in 1802. Namgunyeong was built in 1794 by King Jungjo and was restored relatively recently in 2002.
