The hub for products from three nearby provinces
Cheongju was a place where products from Gyeongsang-do Province, Jeolla-do Province, and Chungcheong-do Province got together during Joseon Dynasty. Most of all, Yukgeori General Market is the largest in that area, having inherited the traditions of “Cheongju Market” among nine markets that thrived in Cheongju area. It was initially named Yuk-geori Market because there were six-way crossroad, but now it turned into a four-way intersection.
Because Cheongju is far from the seaside, food made by ingredients from forests or farms have been developed. The most famous among these are various kinds of ‘jeon’ or pancakes, and meat dishes. All day long, the smell of different kinds of pancakes sizzling on hot grill entices the visitors, and there are many varieties from Korea represented here. Jokbal, seasoned pig’s feet, are also a favorite item at Yuk-geori Market. Made of pig’s feet, there are also a variety of different sizes and tastes available at the market. Fishcakes, which are great as desserts, are made fresh and warm at the site.
The early-morning market at Yukgeori Market bustles lively and operates from 4 AM in the morning to 8 PM at night. So it is possible to shop for breakfast ingredients or to take care of breakfast at the market
