Entrance to Jeonju’s Namboo Market

Market with all of Jeonju’s flavors

Along with ‘Hanok Village’ in Jeonju, Jeonju Nambu Market is the most famous tourist attraction in the area. It has originated from a local market called “Nammun-jang” which was located outside the Pungnam-gate of Jeonju Castle during Joseon Dynasty. Known for local specialty food, the market offers a variety of Jeonju’s flavors.

Some of the most famous menus include: kongnamul guk-bob (bean sprout soup with rice), pisundae (blood sausages), muljjajang (noodles with watery bean-paste sauce), and bibimbob (rice mixed with vegetables). These were all created and developed to satisfy the hunger and nutritional needs of the busy market workers. Although these menus are available in different regions throughout Korea, they are prepared with Jeonju’s own special recipes, a reason why they are so very popular among many tourists from Korea.

There are programs such as “Indi-food Class” and “Nambu Market Mission Tour” in which the tourists can cook their own food with their own ingredients purchased from the market.

The tourists can also visit “Hanok Village” and “Gyeongijeon” next to the market and experience Korea’s traditional architecture and history. At “Hanok Village,” the visitors can spend the night at Hanok guest houses or rent ‘Hanbok,’ the traditional Korean garments to try on. There are many opportunities to experience Korean culture at Literary Gallery, Hanji Experience Center and Traditional Craft Experience Center.
