Over two hundred years ago, King Jongjo was the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. While in mourning for Crown Prince Sado, he planned and built a large city around his father’s tomb. This came to be known as Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon. Nammun, or the south gate, is also known as, “Paldalmun Fort.” Around Paldalmun Fort, nine markets sprang up surrounding the gate, and eventually combined to become Suwon Nammun Market, which is the biggest marketplace in the Gyeonggi-do Provincial area.

Historically, this is the one and only market that was created by a king, and boasts a 220-year-long history, filled with the spirit of tradition.

Gucheon-dong Hardware Market has preserved the culture of blacksmiths. Nammun or South Gate Rodeo Market, or Fashion Avenue 1 – is where all the fashionistas of Suwon come together, and is also a great place for locals! Motgol Market recreates the streets of the Joseon Dynasty, the last independent monarchy. Minarigang Market is filled with a variety of delicious side dishes to take home for meals.
