Snow Crab: Long, Meaty Legs from the East Coast

Welcome to your K-local food trip! The highlight of this culinary journey is Uljin "Snow Crab," a prized delicacy freshly harvested from the deep blue waters of Korea’s East Sea.

Did you know that the "Dae" in "Daegae" (Snow Crab) doesn't mean "big"? It actually refers to "Bamboo." According to a story from the Goryeo Dynasty, an official inspecting the Chuksan area in Yeongdeok caught a crab near a village facing Jukdosan Mountain. He noticed its long, straight legs resembled bamboo, so he named it "Daegae," meaning "Bamboo Crab."

Snow crabs thrive in deep waters over 200 meters, especially on ocean floors where mud and sand mix. Growing in cold ocean currents, they develop firm, succulent meat known for its rich umami flavor. Snow crabs are commonly found in the northern Pacific, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the waters off Alaska. In Korea, they're especially famous in Uljin and its northern coastal areas in Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Uljin Snow Crabs are especially prized for their exceptionally long legs packed with tender meat, and their uniquely delicate and savory flavor. The best time to enjoy Uljin Snow Crab is in January and February, when their flavor is richest. Steamed whole in a deep steamer, you can fully appreciate their delicious taste.

Around Hupo Port in Uljin, you'll find numerous restaurants steaming freshly caught Snow Crabs right on the spot. The crab’s savory aroma and tender, flaky meat fill your mouth with the fresh, briny taste of the ocean. Another local favorite is "Crab Shell Rice," where steamed rice is mixed with flavorful crab innards and served right in the shell.

Why not take a culinary trip to Uljin this winter to savor the delicate texture and rich, savory flavor of Snow Crabs raised in the cold, pristine waters of the East Sea?
