Nightscapes of Korea takes you to places where the night shines even brighter. Today, we journey to Sorae Port in Incheon—a harbor town steeped in the charm of Korea’s coastal life.

Sorae Port, one of the easiest seaside destinations to reach from the Seoul area, began as a humble ferry dock where small boats once came and went. In 1931, the Sorae Salt Field was developed, and a railway—the Suin Line—was built to connect Incheon and Suwon, transporting sun-dried salt to Japan. Salt workers and cargo ferries gathered here, gradually shaping the dock into a harbor.

Then in 1974, after the completion of Incheon’s Inner Port, shrimp boats began docking at Sorae Port, and the harbor quickly grew into a thriving shrimp market, known as a “shrimp pasi.” Today, it stands as the largest traditional seafood market in the Seoul metropolitan area, drawing millions of visitors each year in search of fresh seafood and fermented delicacies.

But the true charm of Sorae Port begins after the sun goes down. The old Suin Line railway bridge has been reborn as a pedestrian walkway, offering sweeping night views of the harbor and the scent of the sea all around.

Just across the bridge lies Haeoreum Square—a peaceful walkway perfect for enjoying Sorae Port’s nightscape. At the center of the square stands the Shrimp Tower Observatory—shaped like a shrimp, the harbor’s signature catch, and unmistakable from afar. Come at sunset, and the warm colors of the sky will gently spread across the harbor, creating a calm and peaceful scene. Once night falls, seven colors of LED light illuminate the tower, creating a dazzling night view.

The sound of seagulls above the harbor, the sun setting beyond the horizon, and a landscape shaped by time—all come together here in Sorae Port, where the sea breeze carries the quiet romance of a Korean night.
