During the Joseon Dynasty, this was a navy base for war boats. It was called the Samdo Sugun Tongjeyeong, or the Three Provinces Navy Command, and it was in charge of the navy in Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong areas. Later, when Japan took over Korea, this place became a main spot for people fighting for freedom. It was a very hard time. So, Gangguan is a place where Tongyeong's good history and its sad past come together.

Today, Gangguan has transformed into a top tourist spot for Tongyeong. Along the waterfront, you'll see many fishing boats lined up. This area is also full of shops selling Tongyeong's famous Chungmu Gimbap, which are small rice rolls, and honey bread. The nearby Central Traditional Market adds even more lively energy with its fresh seafood stores, drawing in many visitors. Three turtle ships and one panokseon float in the harbor. These majestic vessels, traditional Korean warships from centuries past, stand guard like proud reminders of Korea's great naval history.

When the sun goes down, Gangguan becomes even more beautiful. As you walk along the waterfront, you'll discover the Gangguan Bridge, which has become one of Tongyeong's most popular night viewing spots. Originally called the Gangguan Pedestrian Bridge, locals voted in November 2023 to give it the friendlier name Gangguan Bridge. At night, colorful lights illuminate the bridge, creating a romantic seaside atmosphere. From a bench on the bridge, you can watch fireworks explode over the tour boats in the harbor. It feels like watching a magical festival of lights come to life before your eyes.
