Chungmu Bridge opened in 1967 as a safer and more efficient way to connect downtown Tongyeong with Mireuk Island. Before this bridge was built, people, cars, horse-drawn carts, and bicycles all traveled through the Tongyeong Undersea Tunnel. However, as the tunnel aged and safety concerns grew, vehicle traffic was moved to Chungmu Bridge, marking the beginning of a new transportation era. Near Chungmu Bridge, you can still find a memorial stone for Chaknyang Bridge, which was built during the Japanese colonial period. This monument shows that this area has been the heart of Tongyeong's transportation network for many decades.

Chungmu Bridge spans the Tongyeong Canal. The canal bustles with boats throughout the day, regardless of the tides, creating a beautiful scene where nature and city life blend together harmoniously. This waterway perfectly captures the charm of Tongyeong, often called the "Naples of the East." When you walk onto Chungmu Bridge, you'll feel an incredible sense of openness, as if you're walking on clouds, while gazing down at the sparkling waters of the canal below. Looking east from the bridge, you'll see the lively downtown area and the bustling Gangguan Port district. Turn west, and you'll be captivated by the scenic view of Mireuk Island's mountain slopes meeting the sea.

When night falls, Chungmu Bridge reveals a completely different character. The lights from the surrounding harbor reflect off the calm canal waters, creating sparkling silver waves. The bridge pillars feature beautiful murals inspired by Tongyeong-born artist Jeon Hyeok-rim's paintings "Tongyeong Port" and "Canal Bridge," adding vibrant colors to the spectacular nighttime scenery. Chungmu Bridge is also the perfect spot to enjoy the night views of Tongyeong Bridge, which changes colors throughout the evening.
