Nightscapes of Korea takes you to places where the night shines even brighter. Today, we journey to a secret path beneath the sea, the Tongyeong undersea tunnel.
Built in 1932 to connect Tongyeong with Mireuk island, the Tongyeong undersea tunnel is known as the first underwater tunnel in East Asia. Mireuk island was naturally accessible on foot during low tide, but became an island during high tide. However, as more Japanese fishermen from Okayama region settled in the area during the Japanese colonial period, this tunnel was built to provide easier and more reliable transportation.
This tunnel sits about 13.5 meters below the water surface. It was built by putting up temporary barriers on both sides to block the seawater. Then workers set up forms and poured concrete. This was very advanced technology for its time. In 2005, the tunnel was recognized as National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 201.
The undersea tunnel was once a major route for people, horses, and even vehicles. Now vehicle traffic is banned, and it's loved as a walking path for pedestrians only. At the tunnel entrance, you'll see carved letters that say "Yongmun Dalyang." This means "reaching Sanyang through the Dragon Gate." Here, "Dragon Gate" refers to fast-flowing water from an old Chinese story. The legend says that if a carp swims upstream through these rough waters, it becomes a dragon. "Sanyang" is the old name for Mireuk island.
When night falls, the Tongyeong undersea tunnel becomes even more special. Warm yellow lights softly brighten the tunnel interior, creating a dreamy feeling like traveling back in time. Unlike other night spots filled with bright colorful lights, this place offers a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. It's a perfect space for couples to have quiet conversations or for solo visitors to enjoy deep thoughts.
The Tongyeong undersea tunnel brings together old-world engineering and modern charm. How about taking a slow walk along this path, feeling the calm energy of the night sea deep in your heart?
