Busan Gupo Market

Most famous for Gupo noodles, this market has held onto its location in Gupo-dong, Busan for a long time. It is one of the biggest markets in Busan City. Even though it is located in the middle of the city, a large number of vendors still fill the market once every five days, six times a month. On those days, a wide range of goods from all the surrounding areas completely pack its streets.
Gupo Market was mentioned in the book “Yeongnam Eupji or The Annals of Gyeongsang Province,” which was written during the Joseon Dynasty period. Originally, the market was only open once every five days, but was permanently opened in 1972, and has stayed that way ever since. In 1919, during the Japanese colonial period, an independence movement began in this area. For that reason, one of its streets is called “Gupo Manse-gil, or Independence Movement Road.”
The market is close to Deokcheon Station on the Busan Subway as well as Gupo Station on the KTX, a high-speed train line. Naturally, not only locals visit this market, but also many tourists, so at times it can be a bit challenging to move around the alleys of the market if you are bringing young children. To address this difficulty, a public kids’ café was recently opened on the third floor of the Gupo Credit Union building. While shopping, children can spend their time there and entertain themselves, maybe even making new friends. The facility is free for all children, even for several hours, and is equipped with a breast-feeding room, as well as mom’s café where women can take a break, too.
The consideration the merchants have toward their customers and the continuation of 5-day market tradition flood this marketplace with affection. Also, every late October, a “Festival at Affectionate Gupo Market” is held. Why not join the festival and treat yourself to a little affection?
