Gyeongpo Lake, Gangneung

Nightscapes of Korea takes you to places where the night shines even brighter. Today, we journey to Gyeongpo Lake in Gangneung. Here, the soft moonlight and the calm water create a peaceful and beautiful scene.

Located in Jeo-dong, Gangneung, Gyeongpo Lake is a natural lake that connects to the East Sea. Its water is so clear and still, it's also called Gyeongho, which means "mirror lake." The lake shines with a special beauty in every season. In spring, soft pink cherry blossoms surround the water. In summer, deep green trees cast a cool, shady canopy. Autumn brings a gentle golden field of reeds. And in winter, a magical mix of fog and snow creates a truly dreamlike atmosphere.

Thanks to its stunning scenery, Gyeongpo Lake is a must-visit spot for both locals and travelers. As you walk along the peaceful trail, you can feel the pure breath of nature and just be amazed by the views. The lake is also a special nature reserve. It's home to various fish like carp and mullet, and in winter, it becomes a resting place for migratory birds, including mallards and mandarin ducks. It's a true sanctuary for wildlife.
When the sun goes down, people say five moons appear over Gyeongpo Lake. There's one in the sky, one on the lake's surface, one reflected in the sea, one in a cup of wine, and one shining in the eyes of your loved one. Searching for these five moons with someone you care about is a truly romantic moment.

And the best place to experience all those moons is Gyeongpodae Pavilion. This famous spot sits on a hill north of the lake and is considered one of the Eight Scenic Views of the Gwandong region. Long ago, scholars called the most beautiful places along the eastern coast the Eight Scenic Views. They would admire the breathtaking scenery stretching from Chongseokjeong in what is now North Korea all the way down to Wolsongjeong in Pyeonghae. Gyeongpodae was always the first on the list. When you stand here at night, the view of the lake and the moonlight feels so peaceful, it's like time has stopped.

The night at Gyeongpo Lake is like a quiet poem that gently touches your heart. Just looking at the view brings a sense of comfort without saying a word. Tonight, we hope you'll take a quiet step into the moonlit nightscape of Gyeongpo Lake and let its beauty embrace you.
