Nightscapes of Korea takes you to places where the night shines even brighter. Today, we journey to Namdaecheon Stream in Gangneung, a place where festivals and city life flow together.
Flowing through Gangneung and out to the East Sea, Namdaecheon Stream is a local river that provides water for daily life and farming. It also has wide riverbanks that offer a peaceful place for locals to relax. After a major cleanup project in 1992, the riverbanks were transformed into an even more beautiful space. The area is also home to great spots for families to visit, including Dano Park, the Gangneung Dano Culture Center, and the Imyeonggwansammun Gate, among many other historical and cultural sites.
Each year on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the Gangneung Danoje Festival turns the Namdaecheon riverside into a grand stage of traditional culture. Here, you can experience everything from shamanic rituals where gods and people come together, to the nation's largest open-air market, lively folk games, and performances recognized as national cultural heritage. It's a place overflowing with special memories and experiences for everyone.
When night falls, Wolhwa Bridge, a landmark of Namdaecheon Stream, transforms into a dazzling musical fountain. The entire 160-meter-long bridge comes alive with water, lights, and music, creating a truly spectacular show. As you watch the dancing streams of water, you might just feel your daily worries and fatigue melt away.
Right next to Wolhwa Bridge, Wolhwa Street comes alive with a night market and themed festivals. The sparkling lights and delicious food create a lively atmosphere where visitors and locals can share in the fun and make lasting memories together.
No matter the season or time of day, Namdaecheon Stream is always full of charm. Why not come with someone special and immerse yourself in the beautiful night views and lively festivals along this river?
