Nightscapes of Korea takes you to places where the night shines even brighter. Today, we journey to Expo Bridge in Daejeon, a landmark that carries the legacy of the Daejeon Expo and has been reborn as a bridge of love.
Spanning the Gapcheon River and connecting Expo Science Park with Hanbat Arboretum, Expo Bridge was built to celebrate the 1993 Daejeon Expo. Now, more than 30 years later, it still stands as one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.
The two giant arches at the center of the bridge are a modern take on the traditional Korean taegeuk symbol, representing harmony and balance. These arches cross over each other gracefully, creating a beautiful sight. They look like a rainbow that has come down from the sky and settled elegantly over the Gapcheon River.
Expo Bridge also has a romantic nickname, the "Gyeonu and Jingnyeo Bridge." This name was chosen by the public, and it comes with a touching belief. The story goes that if you confess your love on this bridge, your love will come true. It's said that the bridge is like the Milky Way over the Gapcheon River.
By day, Expo Bridge looks grand, blending beautifully with the blue waters of the Gapcheon River. But by night, it shows off a spectacular view as it lights up with dazzling colors. Starting at sunset and lasting until 11 p.m., the lights cover the bridge in brilliant colors. They reflect off the calm water of the Gapcheon River, creating a magical scene that looks like another bridge is floating beneath the water.
The night view from the bridge shows a stunning contrast between the city and nature. You'll see the glowing high-rises of Dunsan New Town and the beautiful media façade on the majestic Hanbit Tower. These sights add a touch of brilliance to the city. In contrast, the dark green of Hanbat Arboretum and the gentle flow of the Gapcheon River create a sense of calm and peace.
A gentle breeze along the Gapcheon River, starlight shimmering on the water, and the legend of Gyeonu and Jingnyeo that lives on in this bridge. At Daejeon Expo Bridge, why not write your own special love story?
