Bronze mirror (Daeseong-dong Tomb Museum)

The artifact displayed in the museum is an enlarged replica of bronze mirror excavated from the 23rd tomb in Daeseong-dong.

The mirrors were commonly found in the tombs of high-ranking individuals, often adorned with various patterns, paintings, and scripts on their backs. Among the decorations were representations of auspicious creatures like white tigers or jujak birds.

In the context of their time, bronze mirrors were more symbolic than practical tools. Within Gaya society, these round and lustrous mirrors were believed to possess mythical solar powers. Noblemen typically owned them, representing their authority and status.

The people of Gaya polished thick plates of copper or bronze until they achieved a reflective surface, a practice reminiscent of ancient techniques employed in Western countries. Originally gleaming like gold, over the span of a thousand years, these bronze mirrors have since rusted.
