Chilsadang, or the Hall of Seven Deities, stands as another minor shrine hall across from the Main Shrine Hall, symmetrically positioned to Gongsindang. As its name suggests, it is a shrine constructed to honor seven deities revered by people of all social statuses, from royalty and aristocracy to commoners, while Jongmyo is a shrine dedicated to honoring royal ancestors, and Gongsindang is dedicated to meritorious subjects.
These seven deities are associated with various aspects of human life and actively engage in different facets such as auspicious occasions, entrances and exits, food, housing, and travel. Rites venerating these deities were conducted concurrently with those honoring the spirits of the royal ancestors. Each deity corresponds to one of the four seasons, and therefore, the rites are performed in the seasons associated with each deity. For example, during winter, a rite was held to honor the deity responsible for overseeing people's travel, aiding in preventing slips on icy roads and injuries. The tradition of worshipping the seven deities illustrates that the ruling class of Joseon acknowledged the common belief that even the smallest aspects of life are overseen by divine beings, thereby necessitating specific rituals to express gratitude to them.
