Hahoe Village Seen from Buyongdae Cliff
Buyongdae Cliff offers a panoramic view of Hahoe Village from its position on a shallow rock mountain opposite the village. From the front of the village, the cliff appears as a steep escarpment, standing like a folding screen.
‘Buyongdae’ means the cliff of Hahoe Village that resembles a lotus flower floating on water. It was also known as “Bugae," meaning the hill north of Hahoe from ancient times, and has been a symbol of the village ever since.
Buyongdae plays a crucial role as a buffer zone, guiding the fierce currents of the river to bypass the village, thus protecting it. The villagers believe that if Buyongdae were positioned slightly differently, they would have faced annual flooding, regarding this cliff as a remarkable safeguard.
From here, the picturesque village unfolds at a glance. Recognized as one of the sixteen scenic spots of Hahoe, Buyongdae allows for an appreciation of the harmony between the mountains, river, village, pine forests, and the lives of the Pungsan Ryu clan who have resided here through the ages.
The village, cradled by the river's embrace and blended seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, embodies Korean tradition. Hahoe's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is attributed to the ongoing preservation and succession of nature, history, tradition, and family legacy through generations.
