While Gyeongju is primarily renowned for its association with Silla culture, nestled within it lies Yangdong Village, deeply rooted in Confucian traditions from the Joseon Dynasty. Yangdong Village holds a distinct cultural significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, alongside Hahoe Folk Village in Andong.
Yangdong Village stood as the largest aristocratic village during the Joseon era. It was a home to clans like the Lee and Son families, who coexisted harmoniously for generations. The village's strategic location, adhering to "fengshui" principles, with a northern mountain and a southern river, contributes to its allure.
Blessed with Gigyecheon River, Yangdong Village facilitated the docking of fishing boats from distant cities like Pohang. Descendants of the Lee family established the Deokdong Cultural Village in Pohang.
Exploration of Yangdong Village's inner sections is highly recommended, where the distinguished Seobaekdang House stands ?the oldest house in Korea. Renowned scholars like Son Jung-don and Lee Eon-jeok were born here, and it is believed that three great scholars will originate from this place, with space for one more.
The village boasts well-preserved 600-year-old houses. Some of them are still inhabited by descendants of the original owners, reflecting its thriving and progressive spirit. If you wander through the village, you might sense that the ancient houses are conveying stories to you.
Consider traversing Angang field to visit Dongnakdang Hall and Oksanseowon Confucian Academy. When in Gyeongju, allocating half a day to immerse yourself in the ambiance of this auspicious Korean village is highly recommended.
