Entrance of Yangdong Village

Yangdong Village is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has traditionally been the village of “yang-bans” since the Joseon Dynasty. Yang-bans, or “virtuous scholars,” were members of the nobility class of Joseon. They had extensive knowledge of Confucianism and were tasked with ruling the country based on its virtues while maintaining respect for their ancestors. Here in Yangdong Village, you can experience the lives of these nobles and learn about their ways.

During the Joseon period, people formed clan villages where they lived with their families. Yangdong Village was the home of the “Son” family from Wolseong and the “Yi” family from Yeogang. Many esteemed officials and scholars were born and raised in Yangdong Village. Their traditions and customs have been passed down for generations, remaining preserved to this day. This legacy has endured for six hundred years through the efforts and dedication of the families who consider this village their home. The village was registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 2010 for its historic value.

In Yangdong Village, you can see many houses that were built during the Joseon Dynasty, now protected as cultural heritage. The Korean traditional houses, like the ones you see here, are called “hanoks.” A hanok usually consisted of more than one building, with inner spaces designated for the husband and wife, and outer spaces intended for guests. Separate quarters were designated for servants, and some hanoks even had storage facilities. A courtyard, enclosed by a fence and a front gate, linked the buildings together.

Koreans traditionally sat and slept on the floor, and anyone entering the building had to remove their shoes. The floor was heated with the traditional “ondols” during cold seasons, embodying Korea’s traditional lifestyle of sitting on the floor.

The segregation of spaces for men and women was also based on Confucian philosophy. Women occupied the inner portion of the house, farthest from the gate, while the exterior was reserved for men. As you walk through the village, you’ll be able to observe examples of these houses.
