Hyangdan House stands as the largest and most splendid house in Yangdong Village, epitomizing the opulence associated with the Yi family.
Connected to Yi Eon-jeok and his brother Yi Eon-gwal, both iconic and prominent members of the Yi family, Hyangdan House remains closely intertwined with their legacy. While Yi Eon-jeok, a neo-Confucian scholar, ventured into government service, his younger brother Yi Eon-gwal chose to remain in the house, dedicating his life to caring for their mother and the family.
Distinct in its architectural structure, Hyangdan House features two courtyards, which is not commonly found in traditional Korean houses.
The main room and elevated floor are deliberately separated from the rest of the building, a design intended to offer increased privacy to the women residing in the house.
