What was the Gilt-bronze Snuffer of Anap Pond used for
[Narration]
This is a gilt bronze candle snuffer that was used by the Silla royal family. It is too big to hold in one hand, and looks quite different to a modern candle snuffer.
[Visitor]
Yes, it looks more like scissors.
[Narration]
Indeed. In a way, this functioned as a scissors. Silla peoples used it to trim the wick of a candle. They cut off the burned part of the wick with this snuffer and the cut wick fell onto the ice cream scoop-like part of it.
[Visitor]
Interesting! They handled candles with much care.
[Narration]
It is probably because the candles were rare. Not many candles were produced, and even in Europe candles were expensive and only found in palaces and famous churches in those days.
