Ancient Chungcheongnam-do culture hall: Baekje Earthenware in Seoul and Chungnam Regions

Baekje Earthenware

The artifacts you are looking at right now are a burnished black jar, tripod pottery and a rooster-shaped kettle. They are high-end kitchen equipment that was used during the Baekje era. These items were not used regularly but rather were status symbols indicating the wealth and power of their owners.

Let's look at the burnished black jar first. The burnished black jar is a representative vessel of Baekje. The whole body of the jar is black and the surface is shiny because it had been sanded and polished. It has a small opening and a long neck and there are patterns engraved on its lid and shoulders.

The tripod pottery is a unique piece only found in Baekje. It is a plate supported by three legs. There are two different kinds of tripod pottery; one resembles a plate whereas the other is bigger and was used more like a tray.

The rooster-shaped kettle has a wide mouth, a handle, and the figure of a rooster's head, along with a hole from which water could be poured. This kettle was imported from China and was of the highest quality.

The earthenware and kettles that were found in tombs were probably highly valued by their owners, so much so that they wished to take the items with them to the afterlife.
