Re(MEMORY + JOURNEY)
I am Heesung Baek and I am an architect.
Memories are one of the most important materials for me, which is the same for this project. Recovering the lost memories of the Hangang(River) was the most important thing.
Many of you may remember the white sand beach that once existed in the Hangang(River). However, few people may know how large it was. If you are in the Hangang(River) Art Museum now, you are standing right on the site where a white sand beach once existed.
The magnificent scenery of beautiful white sand beach extended on several ten kilometers along the Hangang(River)…
I wanted to enable people to recall such memories for some moments.
We have a reason to recall such memories…
If the city development had been undertaken just one kilometer away from the riverside with white sand beach, Seoul could have become a modern city with one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. What do you think? Don’t you think that’s so regrettable?
I created this artwork out of such regret.
So many modern development projects have been carried out without consideration of the value of nature. I hope you all monitor the development projects around you with such a sense of regret. Think as to whether there are any important memories that have disappeared without our knowledge, whether we can keep such memories and so on…
Our memories become architectures, and the architectures give rise to clues to recall our memories for a brighter future for us all.
I am Jinho Jung, and I am an architect.
Architecture is a process of turning ideas and thoughts into a realistic space. Our team selected a concept designed to give old memories of the Hangang(River) back to citizens, and explored ways to enable citizens recall old memories while looking at the Hangang(River) from a specific space. A place where people can see bright light and recall old memories while feeling and touching closer to the Hangang(River). This will become a place providing lots of room for people to think, move and create … With such thoughts and ideas, we created an art museum on the barge.
We had many twists and turns in the process due to the specific environment of the Hangang(River). However, we could build the Hangang(River) Art Museum thanks to the ideas, help and passion of many people. I hope to help citizens recall old memories of the Hangang(River) and put another memory into the barge.
I am Haein Lee, and I am a landscape architect.
I created a sand beach in the island where citizens can take off shoes and touch the sand. I also got an inspiration from the natural patterns created when water flew in and out of the sand beach, and made several green spaces on the island..
The first barge is created as an open space to look at the landscape from all sides, which is different from the inside of the air dome. The second barge is designed with lots of plants, thereby to provide a place for citizens to take a rest and relax amid natural environment of the Hangang(River) while feeling and touching the leaves of willow trees and water grasses, and taking a walk.
The Bamseom Island may catch your eyes on the way back from the museum. The island was once a large white sand beach and the resilience of the island is really remarkable. Therefore, an architecture established on the island has a special meaning. We can see the skyline of the city and the group of willow trees over the artificial island. We expect that people will be able to recall old memories and experience hopes for the future through our artwork.
