Next to the Lacebark pine tree, another magnificent tree greets all visitors. This Pagoda Tree, also known as the Chinese Scholar Tree, is believed to have a lifespan of a thousand years, with its fading flowers renowned for their beauty. Representing knowledge and wisdom, these trees were esteemed by numerous scholars in the past.
Historically, during the Joseon Dynasty period, this tree was a common yet prized feature in the gardens of aristocrats, government offices, and lecture halls. It was also planted in front of Confucius memorial halls in China. In the Zhou Dynasty, these trees were exceptionally rare and precious, reserved for planting exclusively in the tombs of high-ranking officials, symbolizing their esteemed governmental status. With branches reaching up high into the sky, this particular pagoda tree is estimated to be around 450 years old. Although younger than the lacebark tree, it surpasses it in size. Its abundant leaves and ample shade provide a relaxing spot for many visitors to Jogyesa Temple to rest.
