From Gangweolheon Pavilion, you can see Namhangang River at a glance. This beautiful pavilion, Gangweolheon, rests on a steep cliff along the riverside of the Namhangang River. As a riverside temple, there are many places like this within the temple grounds.
Gangweolheon Pavilion is named after the Zen Master Naong’s posthumous dharma name. It was built to pay tribute to his achievements after he reached Nirvana.
When Zen Master Naong was alive, he advocated realistic ideas for saving all human beings, and many people followed him because of his high virtue. However, he had to come all the way to Silleuksa Temple as he was being chased by some Confucian scholars.
Silleuksa Temple was Zen Master Naong’s last residence and he vowed to dedicate his entire life to attain enlightenment. This very site of Gangweolheon Pavilion is where his cremation service was done.
This pavilion with such stunning scenery is loved by Zen Master Naong when he was still alive. It is said that he used to talk to his disciples at a spot that overlooking the river with the moon beaming in the sky. And now, Gangweolheon Pavilion still remains here overlooking the river long after the death of Zen Master Naong.
