Cheonboru of Yongjoosa
“Wow, that’s fabulous! What do you think, honey? Doesn’t this temple look a bit different?”
“You’re right! The name of the building is Cheonboru…”
“Passing the Sammun and entering the main facility of Yongjoosa, the first thing that comes into view is Cheonboru Pavilion! Though it is a temple, it is said that this structure is also often used in palaces.”
“Here is some information regarding its history: Venerable Kwaeseong of Eunhyesa Temple in Yongcheon supervised the construction of Cheonboru Pavilion, while Venerable Paljeong of Yeongensa Temple in Samcheok, Gangwon-do Province was in charge of the multi-colored painting. Wow, these monks were so talented!”
“Honey, look! The lower floor of Cheonboru Pavilion connects to Daeungbojeon! Are these the high foundation stones supporting the six wooden pillars?”
“As King Jeongjo placed his father’s tablet, I bet he wanted Yongjoosa to stand tall for a long time! Come to think of it, doesn’t that stone pagoda seem to be one of a kind?”
“Yes, indeed! That stone pagoda is called Sejon Saritap in Cheonboru Pavilion because it is said that it has enshrined the relics of the Buddha since 1702!”
“Everywhere I look, I can see justification for Yongjoosa’s reputation as a traditional temple!”
