The Dharma Bell of Yongjoosa
“The dharma bell is used to signal the time or the beginning of a ceremony. Its clear resonating sound signifies the rescue of all sentient beings in heaven and on earth.”
“Oh, I see! Venerable, that’s why I feel peaceful when I hear the sound of the dharma bell. Hoho…”
“Haha, do you? This rare dharma bell was designated as National Treasure No. 120. Now, shall we take a closer look?”
“First of all, the front of the bell has lotus flowers carved at the bottom, and there is a heavenly being on each side at the spot where it is struck! As it is a dharma bell cast from the early Goryeo period, it is quite large.”
“The top of the bell also looks rather unique. Isn’t it a dragon?”
“You’re correct! The dragon’s head on top is biting the upper part of bell, its two legs seem to support the overall structure, lifting it into the air. The main body is carved with lotus flowers which are unique in Korean Buddhism, and it can resonate majestic sounds.”
“Look over here. The main body of the bell also looks fabulous! Oh my! Are these the Triad Buddha, Venerable?”
“Yes, they are! As you can see, there are heavenly beings on the sides of the main body and the seated Triad Buddha are carved on top of lotus flowers!”
“Oh, your thin clothes seem to be ascending into the sky as if you were in heaven! Haha…”
