Introduction of Bomunsa Temple

A 10-minute boat ride across the water from Oepori Dock in Ganghwado Island takes you to Seongmodo Island Dock. There, you will meet the cool sea breeze and rural scenery on the 20-ri road that goes to Bomunsa Temple in Nakgasan Mountain.

Boriam Hermitage in Guemsan Mountain of Namhae, along with Hongnyeonam Hermitage in Yangyang County of Donghae and Bomunsa Temple is one of the three sacred Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva sites (Gwaneum sites). The Avalokiteshvara sites are traditional temples where Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is said to reside.

The name Bomunsa Temple, where Bomun stands for “virtuous door”, meaning a door that spreads virtue equally to all without discrimination. It also carries meaning of saving the common people by sharing the relationship with the Buddha in various forms.

With beautiful landscapes, mysterious tales and earnest prayers, Bomunsa Temple served as a “Avalokitesvara Sanctuary” where everyone are welcomed to pray at any time, hence, it continuously attracts both Buddhist practitioners and visitors.
