The Story of the Korean War 2: Last bastion, the Nakdonggang Riverfront
Hello, I’m Han Sang-jin from “History Repletion: Oh! Cool Guys”.
The story I’m going to tell you today is about the Hakdo student soldiers
who took part in the Korean War and were sacrificed.
Less than two months after the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950,
Korea was in a crisis of being pushed back to the Nakdonggang River after a series of battles.
And there were people who rushed to the war to protect the last defense line of the Nakdonggang River.
They fought just like the soldiers to make up for our lacking forces.
They were the Hakdo student soldiers who were as young as 15 and 16.
The young boys came out from their schools
and entered the battlefield with guns instead of pens. They weren't even trained soldiers.
They were someone’s precious sons and brothers,
and they were miserably sacrificed in the crossfire without leaving any military service number behind.
The death of these young students brought the war of an unfamiliar country called Korea to the world,
and thanks to them and the help of many countries, we could reverse the flow of the war.
A letter written by a young boy who were one of the student soldiers remains in this memorial:
“Mother, why do we have to be in a war?” This sad line broke the hearts of many.
Let us remember the countless sacrifices buried in this county where we live today
and take the tour to the War Memorial of Korea.
