Joseon’s Struggle Against Foreign Invasions and the Turtle Ship
The dragon head-shaped structure erected at the bow of the geobukseon, the iron-clad turtle ship, looks impressive. Inside the two-tiered ship, gunners and oarsmen are busy at work. Weapons are stored on the lower deck of the ship. The gunners are in position on the upper deck. The geobukseon was the world’s first iron-clad ship. A fleet of them was employed by Admiral Yi Sun-shin during the Japanese Invasion of 1592-1598. The turtle ship played a leading role in the many victories won by the country’s navy against the Japanese invaders.
